Get Cooking With the Public Domain
Whether or not you actually like to cook, you can make a great deal of money by
revamping recipes and cookbooks you can freely access from the public domain.
There are several ways you can do this. We’ll go over a few of them here.
Ingredients are Free – That is, Ingredients are free from copyright in the first
place so whether or not they are in the public domain, you don’t have to worry
about copyright infringement by using the same set of ingredients that someone
else uses. But let’s say you do procure an old cookbook that is in the public
domain. You probably will have to change the ingredients somewhat, especially if
brand names that are no longer in existence are used. Also, pay attention to the
processes that are used and update them accordingly. Think about which, if any,
appliances, mixer, blender, microwave oven, etc, might need to be used that were
not mentioned in the original recipe. Also pay attention to the verbiage used in
the ingredients. For example, if the recipe calls for lard, you might substitute
vegetable oil or olive oil.
Make it Yours – Even if the cookbook or recipe is a part of the public domain,
infuse your own personality into it by recreating the list of instructions. You
can revamp a recipe in no time like this and add it to a blog or create an
e-book around a certain type of food or a certain way to cook. You can then add
affiliate links and promote products that go along with the recipes, which gives
you a virtually limitless list of products to promote.
Add Photographs – The cookbook or recipes you get from the public domain may or
may not come with photographs but you can certainly add your own. If you really
get into the whole cooking and marketing bit, you can test the recipes yourself,
take pictures, and post them all on your blog or website. If you’re just trying
to make a quick buck, you can certainly repackage old cookbooks but you probably
won’t do as well without adding the personal touch.
Recipes for Health – You don’t have to have a cooking or recipe blog or website
to make great use of recipes you get from the public domain. Many health and
fitness blogs and websites could be greatly enhanced with recipes that are good
for certain diseases and conditions. Diabetes, for example, is a condition that
is blog about and written about a lot online and if you have such a site, you
could certainly enhance it with recipes you get from the public domain, even if
they are not exactly diabetic to begin with. During the revamping process, you
can reinvent them to where they would be healthy for diabetics. You can try this
with a variety of health and fitness topics. Remember, the closer you are to
your subject, the better you are going to come across to your site visitors
because they are going to be able to tell that you are passionate about your
subject. That does not mean that you have to have diabetes or another condition
to promote healthful recipes but do take into consideration your personal
interests before starting such a project. Even if the love of your life is
chocolate, you can do this type of project and do it well so there is something
here for virtually everyone.

Article Marketing – Dealing With Writers Block – Use the Public Domain
Affiliate Marketing for Beginners
Creating Articles and eBooks Using the Pubic Domain
For some people writing can be a difficult and overwhelming process. For others
it can even cause panic and anxiety. But it does not need to be that way if you
take some easy steps to find your inspiration and material in what is called the
Public Domain.
Public Domain
Under US copyright law there is a body of published content, books, articles,
and written material of all sorts, that do not fall under copyright protection.
That means that this material can be reproduced and used for whatever purpose
you may have in mind. For the affiliate marketer, this represents a great
opportunity for finding content that can be repurposed, resold or distributed as
free bonus material or in a free report. Material that falls into this category
of availability is said to be in the Public Domain.
Article Marketing and the Public Domain Content
Article marketing is a natural tool for which Public Domain material is very
well suited. It makes it much easier to research, plan and layout your material
because much of the process is already done for you in the content you will find
in the Public Domain. That does not mean that you should lift material verbatim
and simply put it into your article or e-book. You have to use your common
sense and judge when it is useful and appropriate to take content wholesale and
when you should do some minimal rewriting to add you own style and voice to your
written material.
Given the volume and variety of Public Domain material available, you should
have ample opportunity to create a large volume of rich and interesting content.
This is particularly important because the distribution channels and article
directories are always looking for fresh relevant content for their libraries.
And your readers are also always looking for useful and helpful material to get
them going in starting an internet marketing program.
Search engines also are always looking for new and authoritative keyword rich
content to index and display. So if you take the time to research and find the
Public Domain sites to give you material you need, you will find yourself in a
very good position to rank well in search engines and with the reader looking
for your article or e-book.
Public Domain Sites Where to Start
There are many sites available and you should start by trying a Google search on
your own but there are some classic Pubic Domain sites you should be aware of.
The Gutenberg Project, www.gutenberg.org, is one site that you should know
about. It is a repository for many books and novels, much fiction but some non
fiction as well, and is a great place to take a look to see what you can find.
The Internet Public Library, www.ipl.org, is another resource that can help you
find relevant, authoritative content. It has a great selection of subject
collections and ready reference resources along with a Reading Room category
with magazines and newspapers that are a gold mine for the article writer.
Internet Archive, archive.org, is another great Public Domain site. It offers
not only written material but also video, audio, web based content that can
really make your research and content design snazzy and attractive. Article
marketing with a video and audio component is really cutting edge and would
differentiate you from the crowd.
booksforabuck.com is a site where you will find very affordable material. They
also offer the option of letting you sell your e-book if you should so decide.
A lot of the content is fiction but there are also opportunities for non fiction
material also.
Finally one other site is Wikenews.org.. Wikimedia Commons is a media file
repository making available public domain and freely-licensed educational media
content (images, sound and video clips) to all. This is a great site with all
sorts of content you can explore to find material for your article marketing.
In addition to the free sites there are products for sale that can aggregate
Public Domain for you and save you the time and effort of searching the Web.
Whatever you decide to do, Public Domain is available to you for the taking.
Conclusion
Writers fright or writers block are not uncommon for the internet marketer.
Which ever applies to you, whenever you encounter them, just take a trip to the
Public Domain sites for some inspiration and just plain entertainment and you
will find that writing can be fun and a great way to learn all sorts of new
things.

information when building your internet marketing program.
Useful for affiliate marketing beginners.
Public domain can make you millions
The opportunity is huge for making money with products available in the public
domain which is the main reason I’ve put together this expanded section for you
to learn from.
Where is public domain content available? There are literally millions of
creative works-books, music, music scores, films, photographs, artwork, images,
and much more-that exist in the public domain. But if they’re so public, why are
they hiding?
The short answer is: they aren’t. There are a multitude of well-known works that
people don’t realize are now considered public property. From classic literature
to non-fiction works on a wide variety of topics; silent films, classic movies,
vintage cartoons and beloved songs; even some instantly recognizable artwork and
images can be found in the public domain.
Below you will find several methods of finding public domain work that you can
use in any way you like to start making money.
Internet Searches
Where would we be these days without the Internet? There are literally millions
of resources on the world wide web, available for anyone with the knowledge and
patience to find them.
Search engines are a good place to start. Though Google remains the most popular
and effective, not every site is listed on the search titan. Try running the
same search on multiple engines: AltaVista, Dogpile, Yahoo, and MSN Search are
just a few of the many options out there. (And if you really want to start out
big, you can run a search for search engines first, then check each one in
turn.)
Here are a few examples:
* public domain work examples
* list of free public domain work
* free public domain books
* public domain web site
A note of caution: don’t trust everything you read on the internet. Always find
out where the web site owner got the information (for example, you can probably
trust data from the Library of Congress, but not from “my next door neighbor
Bubba who runs a successful business out of the trunk of his car.”). Generally,
if the same title shows up in multiple searches, it’s probably public domain.
You can also find forums, message boards and e-groups dedicated to public domain
news and discussions. Check Internet directories or do a search for “public
domain forum” (also: substitute group, list, board, news, or community for
“forum”) and you’ll discover more information than you will need. Be sure to
visit groups, lists and forums before joining-read through some of the posted
messages and member profiles to determine whether the other people involved seem
easy to talk with and open to new members with lots of questions. The Internet
community is often a wonderfully supportive place to find people with similar
interests, and most are willing to share the experiences they’ve gained.
A few of the many public domain resource sites available:
Classic Book Library: A free online library featuring literary and genre novels
in the public domain, from authors such as Jules Verne, L. M. Montgomery, and
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Viewable chapter by chapter in HTML.
Project Gutenberg: An enormous collection of novels, non-fiction books and other
written work in the public domain, all available free in downloadable e-book
format.
RetroFilm.com: Provides a catalogue of public domain movies, television shows,
cartoons, musicals, documentaries and more. The site serves television broadcast
companies and does not provide copies of film footage for individuals, but it is
a great place to find titles which you can then track down a copy of elsewhere.
Public Domain Report: The site of a monthly newsletter that reveals significant
works as they enter the public domain. Each issue features selections and
samples from a variety of mediums-at least one new book, film, play, song,
image, and children’s work are included every month, from well-known authors,
artists and creators like Dorothy Parker and George Gershwin. A one-year
subscription will set you back $395, but for those who don’t have the time or
inclination to do extensive research themselves, it is an excellent source of
fresh material.
Public Libraries
Libraries are an excellent-and free-resource for finding public domain material.
Pick a subject that interests you and scan the shelves for older books relating
to the topic, or spend an afternoon browsing through the card catalogue. Most of
the time, the publication date is right near the beginning of the listing on the
card, so identifying works published before 1923 is a simple matter.
Most librarians are quite knowledgeable about their library’s collections and
are happy to help you find exactly what you’re looking for. If you’re planning a
visit to the library, it’s advantageous to make up a list of questions regarding
the object of your search and approach the librarian before you do anything
else, particularly if you are going to a small local library. Larger state-run
library and university library staff members may not have the time or resources
to devote personal attention to every patron.

Top Secret of Public Domain Products in Creating E-Books
Public domain information and works can be used by the public to create a new
information product or e-book. They then can be used as a commercial product to
be sold for profit.
However, a lot of people think that they can just use the book wholesale without
doing much changes to the original material. If so, you cannot and should not
put your name on it.
The secret is, if you want to put your name to the product, you need to ensure
that you do the necessary changes, editing, re-layouts and re-organizations or
mixing of materials before you can claim it as your own. You can even copyright
it as your very own material. This is the fastest and easiest way to create a
brand new information product.
As you can see, public information works can be used to save you much valuable
time that you can divert to your marketing efforts instead. You will also save
much need money and other resources as well. Most of the information is already
available. There are actually millions of public domain works that you can
exploit for profits.
Creating information products is one of the best products to create out there.
Information is always needed and can be updated as necessary, unlike technology
products that can go out of fashion or trend fast. Yes, some information do go
out of date, such as how to fix a typewriter, but often you can re-package the
information such as collecting vintage typewriters and how to maintain them.
The final tip for you is that do not limit your public domain works to written
ones. There are plenty others such as films, movies, audio and even photos that
you can leverage on!
The whole internet marketing game takes time to master, so learn from those who
have been there to shorten your learning time, and avoid painful mistakes.

Specific Money Generating Public Domain Ideas
If you’ve been trying to build a business online for awhile, you probably have
at least a dozen business ideas storming in your head. Let’s discuss how to use
those ideas and combine them with the public domain to create instant products
and in the end, instant businesses.
One way to do so is to use public domain material to profit from trends.
Remember Dan Brown’s ‘The Da Vinci Code’? The book was an instant success, and
is a guaranteed best seller. Ever since it’s release, interest in the book, and
especially the ideas and controversies it raises, has risen exponentially.
Even in April 2005, almost an entire year after the book’s release, the term ‘da
vinci code’ generated over 5000 searches on Overture per day, and when you
convert that number to Google (a rough estimate puts Google searches to be at a
ratio of 8:1 to that of Overture, but we’ll take a conservative estimate of
5:1), you get almost 1 million searches per month. When the movie was about to
be released, daily searches were up to 13,224, or 396,724 searches each month!
This number has been constant for the last few years and most likely was a lot
higher when the book was released. Currently the competition for the website is
roughly twice as much, but that is only due to the book’s popularity over the
last 6 to 8 months.
But how could you profit from it? Simple; use the public domain to provide
images and articles on the topics discussed in the book (the Priory of Sion, the
’sacred feminine’, Leonardo Da Vinci and his paintings, to name a few) and use
AdSense to raise income from the website itself.
With your content coming from the public domain, and your traffic coming from
the search engines and PPC engines (even today the cost-per-click for keywords
related to the book are between 10 to 25 cents), you also have the opportunity
to sell the public domain information in the form of a product — perhaps you
find an old treatise discussing Da Vinci’s treatment of Mona Lisa and The Last
Supper, or maybe you find an authentic history of the master artist.
The lesson here is to keep your eyes open for major search trends launched by
movies and books that prompt a massive interest in history, religion, geography
or even science — it is quite possible find such topics freely and heavily
available in the public domain.

Public Domain Riches Revealed
Have you ever looked all over the house for an item and then when you finally
found it the item was right under your nose all along?
If you have ever wanted to market a product or to make money selling information
products, without losing your savings or spending thousands of dollars, then
public domain might be the answer to your prayers.
It’s everywhere you look but do you know what to look for? Everyday you and
thousands of others come across public domain information and products without
even knowing it. Striking it rich on your first attempt using public domain is
un-likely however let me give you a couple of examples of well-known people who
have built financial empires using public domain.
Walt Disney – Do you think all of those cute little characters that made him
rich were from his own brilliant mind? Not a chance. Uncle Walts’ early day
fortune was created after he discovered the Grimm Fairy Tales, that were loved
by so many, had fallen into public domain. Other than making a few changes and
updating the characters along with some of their names he basically copied them
and made billions of dollars in the process.
Television media mogul Ted Turner created “Turner Classic Movies” known as ‘TCM’
was basically public domain tv because most all of the movies broadcast were in
the public domain. People’s love for classic movies brought them to his TV
network while also making Ted a fortune selling advertising.
These two cases might be extreme examples however they are proof positive that
public domain profits and fortunes are available for the taking. There is little
doubt that thousands of examples from regular everyday people like you, and even
some large companies, would fill volumes with their success stories of public
domain profits. So, what exactly is public domain and how do you know if
something falls within your rights to use it?
The precise answer requires more space than this introductory article however
here is a basic and general overview.
Public domain is most often referred to anything that does not fall under
copyright laws including works that are not eligible for copyright or where
copyright has expired. You may only use the works of another once it becomes
public domain, without obtaining permission of the original copyright holder.
Below are examples of just some of the works in public domain you might have
seen or come across before without even knowing it. Posters, books, reports,
photographs, movies, tv programs, audio recordings, music, plays, manuals,
courses of many kinds and much more! So what are the benefits of you using
public domain information, or works, to create your own products?
Here are a few ideas to get your mind racing.
* Low start up cost
* Eliminate paying royalties to others
* Quickly test a market’s viability without a large investment
* Save money testing a market before further development
* Low investment of time – time is money
* You keep 100% of the profits!
* No copyright fees
* Thousands of works already exist you can use starting today
* Prior success of works usually is an indicator of future success i.e.: Grimm
Fairy Tales!
As you can see the possibilities of using public domain for profits are limited
only by your imagination.
The question should not be “can I start a profitable business using public
domain?” but rather.. Are YOU prepared to do so?

7 Ways to Make Money With Public Domain Maps
Public domain maps are a really great source of material for making money.
The first thought that enters everyone’s mind when thinking maps is just
reprinting them in a variety of formats and selling them as reproductions. This
is a very good way to earn an income from public domain maps. Prices you can
charge vary based on type of paper being used and the size of the reproduction.
Wide format reprints printed on archival papers or canvas can get as much as
$100 or more at a reproduction cost of $20-$30 depending on materials and size
of the print.
But reprinting maps is only one way that you can earn money in this lucrative
field.
Aside from the standard idea of making prints or wide format prints of maps,
there are many other great ways to earn an income from public domain maps.
1) You could print postcards of maps or particular scenes in maps. Many of the
old maps are beautiful and have many fascinating scenes contained within them
that would make excellent postcards or postcard sets. As an idea, you could make
a postcard set of a popular tourist town, get them professionally printed and
sell them to all the gift shops in that town.
2) You could make mousepads of maps. And with a service like cafepress
(http://www.cafepress.com), you can completely automate the manufacturing and
delivery. Lots of history buffs would love having an old map of their home town
or of the Civil War or of any other notable period of history they fancy.
3) You could create compilations of related maps on a CD or DVD. Make
collections of civil war maps, town maps for a particular state old gold mining
maps, etc.
4) You could compile a collection of maps with descriptions into a book (and
again use a service like cafepress to produce them on demand.) If you’ve been in
a bookstore, you will see these collections selling at a very good price.
Popular topics for map books include war strategy maps and early exploration
maps.
5) You could use the maps to build a variety of interesting screensavers. There
are many free or low cost screensaver programs available to help you build your
custom screensavers. You can sell the screensavers of offer them for a free
download in return for building a mailing list or introducing people to your
website.
6) If you are ambitious, you could use something like the old panoramic maps at
the Library of Congress to build advertising pieces – like restaurant placements
- for the towns that are represented in the collection. The map would be in the
center with the ads around the edge.
7) You could produce any type of hardgood – mugs, t-shirts, etc. with map
images. Cafepress offers a variety of items that you can print on. They even let
you build your very own store where customers can shop. They do all the back
office work and you collect a check based on your sales. So with Cafepress, you
could build your very own map t-shirt and mug store if you wanted.
That is certainly enough ideas to help get your creative juices revved up to the
non traditional possibilities of public domain map revenue opportunities.

Public Domain For Writers
Is your work in the public domain? What is this, and why should you care? As a
writer you automatically own the rights to your work*. Your work is NOT in the
public domain unless you put it there, through Creative Commons for example.
For more details on this issue, see the Library of Congress Copyright office.
Author James Boyle of The Public Domain (Yale University Press) offers an
interesting point: older works, books and films, for example, from the 1930s and
before, should be put into the public domain so that current and future artists
can benefit, building our current art upon them.
I agree. And I also enjoy the fact that he is putting his book in the public
domain by distributing it for free online. If you want a hard copy, you can buy
one online or at your local bookstore.
I’m all for benefiting financially from my creative work, and I also agree that
older works, where the copyright older has long since died, should back in print
for the benefit of the public domain.
One such site that is helping with that is the Gutenberg Project. I read the
Declaration on Independence there. The works of Shakespeare are available and
many others books from across the ages. All the works at the Gutenberg project
are uploaded by volunteers, and are mostly available for free.
As an artist and a writer, the issues of the public domain affect each of you.
What do you think about it? Do you offer your work up through Creative Commons,
and if so why? I look forward to hearing what you think.
Tell us what you share for free and what you sell. For example , I share
information freely through my blog and other article sites, while I sell my

Public Domain – 8 Ways to Make Money With It
How can you really make money using public domain? It’s a question I hear
frequently. The short answer is that you can use public domain for anything that
you want to use it for. You’re really only limited by your imagination. You can
literally chop it up, use it completely intact, create derivative works based on
it, combine it with other materials, etc.
Here are eight public domain use ideas to get you thinking:
1. Use public domain to increase your organic search engine traffic. As I said
in the idea above, you can cut up public domain content into separate articles
and distribute them, but you can also slice it up to create articles for your
own website. Make these articles keyword rich and submit them to search engines
to gain a high search engine ranking for your keywords. The number one reason
people go online is for information research. By setting up keyword and content
rich webpages, the search engines will rank you higher and more of those
targeted visitors will find you.
2. Use public domain products to upsell your own products. Upselling is a really
powerful strategy for increasing your revenues, if you have additional products
to offer. Public domain can give you the opportunity to offer an ‘upgrade’ to
your customers. Simply use a public domain product as it is or modify it
slightly and you have a product to use in your upsell.
3. Create a digital information product. This is probably the easiest and most
often used method for taking advantage of public domain. You can easily compile
the material as is (or with a few slight edits) and turn it into an ebook. Then
you can sell the ebook, give it away to subscribers, offer it as a backend, etc.
4. Use public domain as a bonus to your own products. Just like we talked about
using it to upsell your products, you can also use it to create really great
bonuses for your products. People love bonuses. Sometimes people will buy a
product just for the bonus if it’s something that they view as unique.
5. Use public domain on your website as content and partner with Google AdSense
to generate revenue. Use the material you gather from public domain to create an
information rich website. Then place Google AdSense ads within the site. Every
time someone clicks on the AdSense ads, you earn a percentage of that
advertising revenue. If done right this can add up very quickly.
6. Create a physical information product. Just as you can create a digital
information product out of public domain material, you can also create a
physically delivered product and ship it to customers. The real advantage to
creating a physical product is that it may work better for your niche audience
(especially if they aren’t very sophisticated) and physically delivered products
can generally command a higher price.
Some options for a physical product could be to read public domain material into
a a microphone and then record that onto a CD, divide the material into sections
and turn that into a home study course, or simply repackage the information into
a booklet.
7. Create articles or mini courses out of the public domain content. People and
online businesses are starving for great content. You can literally slice up the
material you get into smaller articles and distribute them online to gain
traffic to your website. This is called article marketing, and it’s a great way
to gain targeted visitors to your site, especially when the content actually
comes from public domain works.
8. Create s product based on a public domain work. Some people call these types
of products derivative works. All it really means that you use the public domain
material as the basis to create something completely different like a video,
software, Cd, etc.
There are tons and tons of other ways that you can utilize this freely available
material and make money with it. Hopefully this will give you some idea of the
possibilities and give you a good jumping off spot for using public domain in
your own online business.

get you thinking.
You Own the Copyright
Avoiding Stock Photo Servitude…
Will the new-on-the-scene large corporate market-driven stock photo houses treat
photographers and their photos as commodities?
History tells us the answer could very well be yes. Take the example of the
cartoon syndicates established in the 1920’s under the guidance of newspaper
king, William Randolph Hearst. He first introduced the concept of cartoon
syndicates.
It works like this. The cartoonist signs a contract that says that the syndicate
will promote the cartoon if the artist will follow a certain cartoon theme and
style, and keep to it. The contract also states that the syndicate will own the
copyright to the cartoon. Not the cartoonist.
How’s that? The syndicate owns the copyright?
If the artist decides to leave the syndicate, he or she cannot continue the
cartoon. The syndicate will appoint a new cartoonist to continue it.
ONLY PEANUTS FOR PEANUTS
Believe it or not, the late Charles Schultz, of Minneapolis, did not own the
copyright to his cartoon, Peanuts. The syndicate owned the copyright. Schultz
received royalties, yes, and also promotion and endorsement monies, but he did
not own the copyright on his own creation!
Can the corporate stock photo agencies of the future institute a system
something like this? They certainly could. Vulnerable young photographers in the
future, trying to make a living, could conceivably be open to signing over their
copyright privilege in return for a paycheck, royalties, or other monetary
return.
LESSON: Read the fine print. Stock agencies are starting to treat stock photos
as commodities, that are “popular today, and gone tomorrow”. As an extra benefit
to the agencies, they might want to secure the copyright of your short-lived
generic stock photo. Perhaps their enticement will be to pay you a higher
percent royalty (60% instead of 40%) if you sign over your copyright.
And don’t forget, if they own the copyright, they are now free to digitally
“enhance” your photo in any way they wish-such as changing the color of a flag
or removing an object.
If you are new to the stock photography field and you submit your images to a
major stock photo agency, be careful not to sign over your copyright to the
agency.
